Sleep Deprivation Essay - 729 Words

No one really knows why humans sleep, but it is said that they use less energy when they are sleeping. Many Americans do not get the amount of sleep they need to get, and this can affect their cognitive abilities. The cause of this sleep deprivation varies among individuals, but could be overscheduling or even technology. Many people may get the symptoms of sleep deprivation, but they ignore it, and this leads to harsh consequences. Sleep can play a vital role in making someone feel better, living a healthy lifestyle, and help them stay attentive. When a person does not get an adequate amount of sleep during the night, it can affect the brain and cognitive function. This is called sleep deprivation. Research says that a third of Americans†¦show more content†¦This is why teens seem more awake at eleven or twelve rather than in the evening. Next, technology, such as cell phones and computers, can change a teenager’s sleep cycles. Obviously, social media can distract a teen, but going deeper in, the light that is emitted by technology can affect melatonin levels. The light can suppress the production of melatonin when it hits the receptors of the eye (Garey, n.d.). This can cause the teen to feel less tired than they should be later in the night. Lastly, after school tasks such as homework and activities can affect a teenager’s sleep schedule. Balancing all these tasks, plus school and social time, can be difficult for teenagers. With all this, there is not enough time in the day to, and the teen has to gi ve something up, which would be sleep. Some teens even try to overschedule, and when night time comes, their homework is not finished. All of this leads to consequences such as poor grades, car accidents, poor concentration, depression, etc. Therefore, the reason why teenagers face sleep deprivation would be biology, technology, and after school tasks. There are many physical and physiological consequences to sleep deprivation. First of all it can affect the digestive system and cause weight gain. Sleep can affect the two hormones that control hunger and fullness, leptin and ghrelin (Pietrangelo, 2017).
